Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Amy Reed and her husband Dr. Hooman Noorchashm Twelve members of Congress asked a federal watchdog agency (GAO) last week to investigate why the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took so long to warn that power morcellators may spread unseen cancers in the course of removing uterine fibroids.
“Hundreds, if not thousands, of women in America are dead” because of these devices, the bipartisan group of lawmakers wrote in an August 7 letter to the US Government Accountability Office (GAO).
In use since 1991, the morcellators essentially chop up/ grind the fibroids up to be removed laparoscopically. 1-350 end up having cancer at a later point bc the cells which were contained in the fibroid we’re released and spread through the body. Dr Amy has had cancer twice now bc of her laproscopic hysterectomy in 2013. 😳
I’m grateful to these two. They are saving lives. 👏🏾
If you are considering #fibroidsurgery and specifically #laparoscopy ask your doctor if they are using the morcellation method or something else? If so, what it is? Johnson and Johnson has stepped up and recalled their morcellators. And Princeton hospital has stopped its use. But this is not world wide. So wherever you find yourself in the world. Be sure to ASK QUESTIONS!
